space

Hi, my name is trent. I will be talking about space.

4.6 billion years ago, the solar system was made. We learned that there was a star called “The sun” and there was a planet called “Earth” what were standing on right now. There was a whole bunch of cool things to discover! I know a lot of you out there already know some things about our home, but I may put somethings that might blow your mind.

  1. Pieces of Mars have actually fallen to Earth. Scientists have found microscopic fragments of martian atmosphere on our planet (likely brought to Earth via meteorite).
  2. The point of no return around a black-hole is known as the event horizon.
  3. Any free-moving liquid will form into a sphere in outer space thanks to its surface tension.
  4. The revolution of the Earth increases annually by roughly 0.0001 seconds
  5. The International Space Station (ISS) circles the Earth every 90 minutes.
  6. The number of stars in the Milky Way is estimated at 200,000,000,000.
  7. Britain has only launched one satellite, known as the Black Arrow.
  8. Pluto, is named after the Greek God of the underworld (previously known as Hades).
  9. Jupiter’s moon Io has volcanic eruptions.
  10. Mars has the longest valley in our solar system. Valles Marineris is 2,500 miles (4,000 km) long and can be seen from space.
  11. Mercury and Venus are the only planets in our solar system without moons.
  12. The Milky Way is approximately 100,000 light-years wide.
  13. One day on Mars is 24 hours, 39 minutes, and 35 seconds long.
  14. Venus is the only planet that spins in the opposite direction of all other planets.
  15. Venus has more active volcanoes than any other planet in our solar system.
  16. Pluto owns a hazy atmosphere that extends 1,000 miles (1,600 km) above it’s surface.

I believe you probably enjoyed it, but it isn’t over yet…

17. Almost every element that makes up your body was created inside a star in outer space. Think about that for a moment.

18. Venus and Mercury are the only two planets in our solar system that don’t have moons.

19. It is estimated that the Apollo astronauts’ footprints on the moon will stay there for at least 100 million years! They will eventually erode however, as the moon is constantly getting pounded by space debris and meteorites.

20. Venus is the only planet in our solar system that spins the other way.

21. There’s a gas cloud in the constellation Aquila that contains enough alcohol to make over a trillion pints of beer! That’s 300,000 pints for everyone on Earth, every day, for one billion years.

22. Mathematically speaking, white holes should exist in space however they’ve yet to be observed anywhere in the universe.  Hypothetically, they are the antithesis of a black hole in that they couldn’t be entered from the outside yet light and matter could escape from them.

Space facts that will blow your mind.

23. Our sun is so dense that it accounts for 99% of our solar system’s mass.

24. Since its discovery in 1846, Neptune has only made one full orbit of the sun.

25. We know more about outer space than we do about the deepest parts of our oceans.

26. There’s a planet just 63 light years away from Earth called HD 189733b. The huge gas giant is so hot and volatile that it rains molten glass. The atmosphere reaches a scorching 1000 degrees Celsius as it rains blistering hot glass sideways.

27. When in space, astronauts can’t tell if they need to pee so they’re trained to relieve themselves every 2-3 hours. Otherwise they could have a floating mess on their hands.

28. Earth’s diameter is 12,742 km. The sun’s diameter is 1.3914 MILLION km.

29. Travelling at the speed of light, it would still take 100,000 years to traverse the Milky Way.

Space Facts

30. If you unraveled all your DNA, it would be 34 billion miles long. That’s enough to reach Pluto and back six times!

31. Almost all the hydrogen atoms inside your body were formed during the big bang 13.7 billion years ago.

32. The International Space Station circumnavigates Earth every 90 minutes. That means it sees a sunrise every 5400 seconds.

33. A percentage of the white static seen on old TVs is afterglow of the Big Bang.

34. The ground you’re standing on now is only 100 km (62 miles) from space.

35. The spacecraft that put man on the moon ran on less computing power than the phone in your pocket.

36. Starquakes are a thing. They occur when the crust of a star shifts, resulting in a fluctuation of radiation intensity. They’re more powerful than earthquakes. If a 22 Richter scale equivalent starquake occurred within 10 lights years of Earth we would all die.

So that’s all of the facts. Bye Bye. BAM!
